Beautiful, good, and pure

When you think of all the time, money and effort some people spend on looking up their genealogy, I like to remember what Mrs. Eddy says in this week’s lesson, “In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry.” In the First Edition of Science and Health (which Mrs. Eddy referred to as the “precious volume”) she states, “Man is the offspring of Spirit: the beautiful, good and pure are his ancestors…” The beautiful, the good and the pure ARE my ancestors! What more do I need to know than that?!

Re: Beautiful, good, and pure

That is a really beautiful thought!

The next line, “His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence.”

There is the idea in some religions and cultures that there is a “path to enlightenment” and yet in Christian Science I can understand that we are born in God’s light, and of it. We are not born in darkness and have need to find our way to light. It is not “ashes to ashes, dust to dust.”

Since everything I do that isn’t for God is actually on the path toward suffering and darkness it seems a lot better to embrace what I began as, which is “The new idea, conceived and born of Truth and Love, is clad in white garments.”

I am so very grateful for this lesson!
