comparisons

"For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise." (II Corinthians 10:12)

I love this. Human comparisons are not only worthless, but they are misleading. I used to weigh some peoples' lives and think, "would I like to be that person? do what that person is doing? achieve what that person achieved?" It always left me feeling miserable. Until I learned that comparisons like that are totally wrong.

The only thing that matters is whether I am measuring up to what God has for me to do. Am I fulfilling his plan for me? Is my heart right with him?

Have you ever felt pressure from friends or family members who have their own expectations for you to fulfill? It was a very liberating thing for me to learn that we each have a unique place to fill. No one can fill it for us, or dictate it to us, and we can't fill anyone else's place. So don't try!

Re: comparisons

"Comparisons are wrong. Each man is complete and perfect and we must know no other man. God is the only Cause, Spirit is the only Substance, Love the only Force, harmony the only Law. Unselfed interest is the right attitude for church workers."
Mary Baker Eddy
