Rising above the human

“I attribute my success to this—I never gave or took any excuse.”
—Florence Nightingale

I saw this quote last night, and remembered that Mrs. Eddy wrote about her:

It is proverbial that Florence Nightingale and other philanthropists engaged in humane labors have been able to undergo without sinking fatigues and exposures which ordinary people could not endure. The explanation lies in the support which they derived from the divine law, rising above the human. The spiritual demand, quelling the material, supplies energy and endurance surpassing all other aids, and forestalls the penalty which our beliefs would attach to our best deeds.
— from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, Page 385

This was very timely for me, as I have much work to do. Maintaining the understanding that “it is the spirit that quickeneth” and being aware of how Animal Magnetism is trying to get me off track—by telling me I am too tired or busy or whatever—is something I am working on every day. I want to be ready at all times to do the work that I feel God is asking of me.

I am grateful for both the opportunity to grow in Christian Science and the opportunity to give back that being a member of Plainfield offers. I know that this work is why God brought me here—straight out of the hell I made for myself—and I will not ever forget that!
