in vain they do worship me

"in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."SH5

Jesus was talking about the scribes and Pharisees, the religious know-it-alls of his time! Their text was the same as Jesus' - the Scriptures. What was the problem?
In the language of the 1st Edition of S&H, they operated from the standpoint of personal sense, not Principle. Jesus saw himself as Principle (gain from 1st ed) and expected us to follow. If not, even with all the literature we have been blessed with, we worship in vain - quoting, quoting, quoting, talking, talking, talking - in vain.

Sounds like the scribes and the Pharisees may not have been taking all their knowledge to heart. As an intellectual exercise, religion would become "I'm a better worshipper than you"--look at how much I know and how well I follow all the "rules"! But it's not about the head, it's about the heart. Heavy scholarly study of the Scriptures won't do any good if it leads to judging and comparison about who's doing most studying and who knows the Scriptures the best. Pride needs to be exchanged for humility, giving strength for compassionate action.
