the Spirit of God

"the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." (I Corinthians)

Nobody can KNOW what God is. Nobody can KNOW all the details of infinite Mind except divine Mind itself. But we can feel His Spirit within us. We can hear His still, small voice of Truth within our hearts. And if we trust that Spirit, that still small voice, we will never go wrong.

That is why the Science of Christianity can never be an intellectual exercise. It can be lived (learned) only by trusting spiritual sense. Mrs. Eddy has done mankind an invaluable service by explaining the Science, but it has to be lived in order to be understood. She writes in the textbook: "Students of Christian Science, who start with its letter and think to succeed without the spirit, will either make shipwreck of their faith or be turned sadly awry." (S&H 451)

And what is the spirit? It was in last week's lesson. It is a "broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart..." Last week's forum had some good things to say about this. It is a heart that is broken of all pride and human ambition. It is a heart filled with unselfed Love. Without this, the letter is empty. In writing of the ancient healers, who may have known very little of the Science of healing, she states: "So divinely imbued were they with the spirit of Science, that the lack of the letter could not have hindered their work, and that letter, without the spirit, would have made void their practice." (S&H 145)
