Jonah, the son of Amittai

This from Barnes Notes Commentary:
Jonah prophesied during the reign of Jereboam II (2 Kings 14:25). This book was written by Jonah himself. He was a contemporary of Hosea. If he hadn't written it, it would never have been placed by the Jews among the books of the prophets.
This mission fell during the latter part of Jonah's life. He did not flee from the presence of the Lord, but from this mission. He wanted to abandon his office. As a prophet, he knew very well that he could not flee from God. Like all Jews, he knew the Psalms very well and he would have known Psalms 139 (the Responsive Reading). The conversion of Nineveh was to be a rebuke to the Jews and its people were to be used by God as instruments against the Jews. They were the Assyrians, who conquered Israel in 722 BC.
Jonah showed the fullness of his faith when he sang David's Song of Thanksgiving while in the belly of the fish. Jesus made frequent mention of Jonah in the Gospels.
I found it interesting that even though Jonah was being disobedient, all the sailors were converted through his reflection of divine Love for them. He wanted to be thrown overboard to save them.

Re: Jonah, the son of Amittai

Thank you so much for sharing this information! This is another reason our Bible studies have been so valuable; the searching out of facts that authenticate the lessons and great truths we are learning in our Bible Lessons.
