From the presence of the Lord

Some thoughts on the story of Jonah:

Jonah temporarily estranged himself from the Lord when he fail to obey God's call to witness for Him. Jonah was "fast asleep" in the midst of danger. When Jonah prayed from the belly of the fish the Lord heard him. ( no place admiss for prayer and "man's extremity is God's opportunity") God answered his righteous prayer. I imagine the situation was quite humbling. We should never feel in our backsliding it is too late to turn around.

The mariners idols were inadequate to lull the storm.
"every man prayed to his god to save the ship and themselves" and they turned to the God of Jonah when the storm ceased.

I am so grateful for this wonderful lesson. I have never paid this much attention to this story before or took so much from it.

Re: From the presence of the Lord

Today during the Roundtable a discussion around Jonah sleeping during the storm came up.

The term mesmerized was helpful. When in the wrong mind it feels laborious, tiring, will wear you out/put you to sleep.

" 'You say, ‘Toil fatigues me.’ But what is this me? Is it muscle or mind? Which is tired and so speaks? Without mind, could the muscles be tired? Do the muscles talk, or do you talk for them? Matter is non-intelligent. Mortal mind does the false talking, and that which affirms weariness, made that weariness.' (S&H 217:29-2) Weariness, exhaustion, lack of sleep are not the results of having too much to do; they are the products of a belief in a selfhood apart from God, products of pride and fear, impatience and self-assertion, the arrogant belief in a selfhood apart from God gets tired."
