Fustian no more!

8. 142
In vain do the manger and the cross tell their story to pride and fustian.

FUS'TIAN, noun
1. A kind of cotton stuff, or stuff of cotton and linen.
2. An inflated style of writing; a kind of writing in which high sounding words are used, above the dignity of the thoughts or subject; a swelling style; bombast.
Fustian is thoughts and words ill sorted.
FUS'TIAN, adjective Made of fustian
1. In style, swelling above the dignity of the thoughts or subject; too pompous; ridiculously tumid; bombastic.

I thank God for Christian Science, because there is such an emphasis on having thoughts and words well sorted. Most of the time I feel quite clear, and it makes the moments that I slip very noticeable. What used to feel normal, now feels intensely wrong.

I used to tell outlandish stories to myself and others when something happened, instead of facing it. This would cause laughter and make me forget what went on. Then I would get right back in line, waiting for the next 'bad' thing to happen.

Now, thanks to all I am learning here, I don’t need to hide behind stories. Nor do I want to. I can see it was self-mesmerism. Truth is all we need, and there is no reason to be pompous about it! What a wonderful example Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy gave with their thoughts and words and lives! I am so grateful that Plainfield is bringing all this to light for me. Thank you!

Keep the joy of Christian Science and a well-grounded and boundless hope in your success. Remember, as Truth progresses, error grows more subtle and aggressive, but it does not become something — it always remains an illusion, and is always met and destroyed with the understanding that divine Love is the only power.
—from Collectanea, by Mary Baker Eddy

Re: Fustian no more!

Beautifully stated.Thank you. Who wants to be "bombastic" anyway, can there be anything worthwhile in expressing such a quality...?

Learning what humility really means through CS makes it such an appealing quality to attain and live!
