New Meaning and Understanding

I’m thankful for the 1828 dictionary and all in this church who have referred to it and recommended it over the years.

I gained a better understanding of the lesson by looking up several words this week, including the following:

1)Know- To acknowledge with due respect.
To choose; to favor or take an interest in
To commit

Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Eve was tempted by the desire to know good and evil. According to the definitions listed above, this would be impossible. I’m glad to understand now that I can’t acknowledge, favor, or commit to God as well as the belief in something apart from Him. Trying to do so requires me to turn away from God (Truth), causes confusion from the very beginning, leads to favoring or being overcome by evil, and results in destruction. This is pointed out in citation 5. S&H 92:26-31

“The foundation of evil is laid on a belief in something besides God. This belief tends to support two opposite powers, instead of urging the claims of Truth alone. The mistake of thinking that error can be real, when it is merely the absence of truth, leads to belief in the superiority of error”.

2)Naked- Unarmed; defenseless; open; exposed; having no means of defense or protection against an enemy’s attack, or against other injury.

In reference to Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; I thought of S&H19: 26-28 from last week’s lesson:
“If living in disobedience to Him, we ought to feel no security, although God is good”.

By disobeying God, Adam and Eve felt insecure as a result. I’m grateful to have learned that if I’m feeling insecure about anything, I can always question by obedience to God, if I realize that I’m being disobedient (for example forcing my own will, or avoiding something that needs to be done), obeying Him again (asking for guidance, listening, and trusting, and doing right) will restore my sense of security and protection.

Thank you for this lesson. I’m learning so much!
