Not satisfied with the idea of a preacher feeding a congregation with his/her interpretation of the Word, after many years of prayer, Mary Baker Eddy was led to establish the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as the only Pastor of her church. Both divine in nature, these books need no interpreter. They require the reader go straight to God for inspiration and understanding.

Furthermore, Mrs. Eddy provided the Lesson-Sermon, with 26 carefully appointed subjects, as structure through which to select readings from the Bible and the textbook. This revolutionary idea, to be studied each day all week, and then to be read as the focal point of the service on Sunday, encourages use of the Bible and the textbook for guidance every day, and cultivates active participation in the Sunday service.

In this the Plainfield church, we have added three new elements to support Mrs. Eddy’s vision: an online Lesson Forum, a Bible Study on Saturday morning, and a Roundtable discussion prior to the service on Sunday. All three encourage the student of Christian Science to share thoughts, experiences, Bible knowledge, etc., and they serve to stimulate the study of the Weekly Lesson. All are welcome to participate.

“What can fathom infinity! How shall we declare Him, till, in the language of the apostle, “we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ”?” (p.519, S&H)

The Lesson-Sermons presented here are from the Independent Christian Science Quarterly published by our church. They are carefully crafted to uplift and heal, and also to challenge thought to spiritual growth.
