Atomic Force

The answer to the question posed as the subject of this week's lesson is "Yes" OR "No." On page 190 of Miscellaneous Writings, under the subject "Bible Lessons," Mrs Eddy says: "Atomic action is Mind, not matter." So if we mean material force, the answer is "no." But the underlying cause of all real action in the universe is Mind, with a capital "M." A subtle distinction, but critical to our correct understanding of Science!

Re: Atomic Force

We can speak about the metaphysics of it, but honestly, who believes that this is possible?
"So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day."BB3
There is mathematical evidence, apparently, that indicates there was an inexplicable loss of time back then...
But why should it be so difficult for us to believe such a thing possible?

We are so thoroughly educated in material cause and effect! It is helpful to recognize this as we unsnarl our own thinking relating to what we accept as real, and strive to bring our thinking in line with the metaphysics - our expectancy!!
Lots to do here.

Re: Atomic Force

There is so much resistance to acknowledging Spirit as the force of the universe. Can't see it, can't hear it, can't manipulate it humanly. Yet, when things happen that are humanly impossible it becomes clear that there is no other explanation than spiritual force. There is a moral element which is key, this force which is God is only for good. When faced with conditions in our world that need correcting, God, the only force, adjusts the balance to right. Human will or intellect cannot stand against the one and only Force.

Re: Atomic Force

Sometimes I marvel at the wisdom in selecting the subjects for our lessons. This one on Atomic Force challenges the very way that we think about everything. Material law is not the governing force. Spiritual Force, or God, is the ultimate that determines the way things are, are it is only a force for good. But it may appear totally illogical to the material minded, and yet it simply is.
Back in the 1980's, a group from our church went to England, and there met John Morgan, and independent Christian Scientist. He had witnessed a first hand incident with Herbert Eustace, which took place in the 1950's, and related it to us. Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were out one day with Mr. and Mrs. Eustace by car. It being a hot day, they stopped to get some ice cream to take home. On the way home, Mr. Eustace wanted to make another stop before going home. The others in the car told Mr. Eustace to hurry because the ice cream would melt. Then Mr. Eustace stopped, looked at the ice cream and said "it will stay hard until we are ready for it." Despite the heat of the day, the ice cream did indeed stay hard until they were ready to eat it!

Re: Atomic Force

Bruce, I love the ice cream story because it shows me God is governing everything " from a blade of grass to a star". Isn't it easy to let little things slide by? This is a completely new concept for me since coming here - practical, daily reliance on GOD for all of my needs.

And this illustrates how sensitive his thought was!

Thank you, Bruce.
